Kalian Winter gives the contents of his purse to three young Ferelden refugees living on the street.
In the Rose of Orlais tavern on the Jader waterfront, Cainan Sauvage wins his card game, then picks a fight with a vulgar Ferelden mercenary for harassing a barmaid. The proprietor bans him from the tavern after he trounces the mercenary.
Soon after arriving in Jader, Sister Elinowy is accosted by a mugger outside the Raven's Roost tavern, and persuades him to walk into the tavern where he is subdued. A runner is sent for a guardsman while Elinowy is served soup.
Martin, at the end of his guardsman shift, records a complaint made by a beaten Ferelden mercenary against a "Monsieur Sausage," and visits the scene of the alleged crime. He is stopped by a runner who summons him to the Raven's Roost.
Cainan finds his way to the Raven's Roost tavern, and observes from the bar. Kalian meets the Sister. Martin arrives and questions Elinowy. Kalian offers Elinowy a room for the night and volunteers to help Martin take the prisoner to the constabulary. As they leave, Cainan offers to pay for Elinowy's room and drinks, and they take a table together.
Kalian helps Martin take the subdued mugger to the guardhouse. After he's locked up by another guard, they return to the Raven. Kalian picks up a crumpled paper before going back inside.
Whilst Elinowy and Cainan are getting to know each other, a ragged woman offers a rose in exchange for "alms for the disappeared." Cainan gives a generous donation, and she explains people in the refugee camp have gone missing. Elinowy plans to visit the refugee camp next morning and Cainan decides to stay at the night at the Raven's Roost and go as her escort.
At the bar, Martin and Kalian drink ale and examine the flyer Kalian picked up, advertising well-paid work, and a letter on the back to a woman whom Martin recalls had reported a missing boyfriend. They decide to investigate the refugee camp next morning.
